Preserving the Village’s character for generations to come
16 July 2026Dulwich Village’s iconic white posts and chains are getting a refresh. A full programme of repair, repainting and replacement is now underway across five locations.
A programme or repair and redecoration has started which will include all of the Estate’s posts and chains in the Village. One of the most distinctive features of Dulwich Village is the line of white-painted posts and chains that border the green amenity areas. The Estate has begun work to repaint, reset or replace over 1700 posts in five locations.

Their origins date back to 1775, when local residents sought permission from The Dulwich Estate to enclose the greens surrounding their homes. They were installed to protect these areas from grazing animals and passing traffic and over have evolved into the chains seen today. More than 250 years later, the posts and chains remain an iconic feature of the Village, helping to preserve its unique historic character and sense of place.
A programme of essential maintenance to the residential dwellings in Dulwich Village north parade is likely to begin over the summer. The works will involve repairs to the historic buildings that form the high street, helping to protect and preserve them. As many of the buildings are of considerable age, regular maintenance is vital to ensure their long-term structural integrity and appearance. Scaffolding will be erected above the shops at Megan’s and stretch to hair salon HG Dulwich. It will remain in place throughout the summer and into the autumn while works are carried out in phases. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption, and businesses will remain open and accessible during the programme.
These important works represent a significant investment in maintaining the unique character and heritage of one of London's most distinctive historic high streets. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding while the improvements are completed.
