Old College Gardens set for a new chapter
16 July 2026Old College Gardens has been transformed following the removal of dense, overgrown planting that had restricted light and views.
The transformation has opened up the gardens, creating a brighter and more welcoming environment while also allowing a full assessment of the existing tree stock ahead of a new planting scheme this autumn. Plans for autumn include low-level woodland planting and spring bulbs to enhance biodiversity and seasonal interest.
The area is also benefiting from a comprehensive soil enrichment and top-dressing programme. To ensure the gardens continue to thrive, they will be maintained as part of a dedicated fortnightly gardening cycle.
Old College Gardens sits at the heart of Dulwich Village and forms part of the historic grounds once associated with Dulwich College, founded in 1619 by Edward Alleyn. The space originally served as part of the College’s estate lands, providing a formal garden area close to the Old College building. Over the centuries, it evolved from a structured, institutional garden into a quieter communal green space for local residents.
