Work underway in Dulwich and Sydenham Hill Woods

17 September 2025

The Reuniting Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood project is underway.

It is funded primarily by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and is being delivered by London Wildlife Trust in partnership with The Dulwich Estate and Southwark Council. It will secure the future of the woods by bringing together how they are managed with improvements such as a new hard surfaced path network, signage and maps, information boards and entrance ways. Temporary fencing and ‘dead hedges’ are already supporting the regrowth of ground flora and the subsequent benefits for wildlife. They protect the wood from trampling and block informal paths that lead to the increasing fragmentation of ground foliage which is detrimental to wildlife. Having new paths will also support this and make it easier for the woodlands to be walked throughout the year.

There is also a new events programme, and local residents especially are welcome to join the regular walks on the history of the woods and the wonderful plants and wildlife. Specialist walks on subjects such as birds, fungi, and evening bat walks will be available to book at the London Wildlife Trust website. All events are free of charge. LWT continue to offer an events programme for schools to bring nature to children and the pond-dipping platform to support nature activities has already been repaired and extended.

Over the next three years you will notice other improvements such as work to stop any further decline of the folly, additional benches and more volunteering opportunities. If you are interested in volunteering more information can be found via this link: https://www.wildlondon.org.uk/volunteer.
