Management of Dulwich Estate trees

06 August 2025

The Dulwich Estate recently carried out a review of the health of trees near to Estate leasehold properties.

The purpose of the review was to enable succession planting of its stock of ancient trees, and to ensure no danger is posed to residents by diseased or structurally weakened trees. Following extensive surveys by arboriculturists, a number of trees have been deemed unsafe are now subject to removal. Residents in properties near the affected trees will be notified on the Estate portal, about individual tree removal plans.

The Estate manages 1500 acres of land. Around one third comprises ancient woodland, parks, meadows and allotments which the Estate maintains with care, balancing safety and sustainability. It does not remove any trees unless absolutely necessary. A replacement tree will be planted for each diseased or weakened tree that is removed, not always in the same location. The Estate’s new sustainability strategy, Shaping Our Future, Celebrating Our Past, sets out plans to continue to enhance the natural environment and increase biodiversity. Last year we planted 40 new mature trees as well as hundreds of saplings, work which will continue this year.
